I find the image of the I turned myself into a hitman Morty I’m John Rick shirt of all the things they don’t know to desire, to be fairly offensive. Poverty is fucking hell. Food, heat, shelter, medical and dental care–these things cost money. Imagine being a parent, telling your children they have to end dinner still hungry, because you have to save some food for tomorrow. Or watching your teeth rot from your face because you have no money to give to a dentist. Or teaching your kids how to adapt to the sudden loss of a basic utility, like using buckets of river water to flush the toilet.

Or counting up pennies to buy a candle, so your kid can see to finish her I turned myself into a hitman Morty I’m John Rick tshirt Now, imagine dealing with this stuff, when your children’s classmates live in large houses, and always have clean clothes, and their parents trade in their cars for new ones every year. I think that, short of starving or freezing to death, the most painful part of poverty is the humiliation, the shame, and sense of worthlessness. I’ll put it this way money may or may not be able to buy happiness, but in a capitalist society, it sure as fuck buys away a lot of unhappiness–more than you’re probably aware of.
